R.I.P. Mr. Jobs

Rest in Peace Steve Jobs and thanks for bringing together innovation, design and aesthetics. There might have been other innovators who must have thought of laptops, tablets and phones without any keys and buttons, but you thought about it, designed it and brought those ideas to life.

Possible iPhone 4G Prototype Found Lying in a Bar

So the story goes like this- a guy walks into a Redwood City California bar (Gourmet Haus Staudt) and finds a phone lying on the table/stool in an iPhone 3G case (which someone supposedly lost); he picks it up and opens the case but finds a different looking (upgraded) iPhone. He tries to find the owner and even tries to contact Apple but with no success. The phone he found had an upgraded operating system as compared with the current iPhone 3GS, better resolution, 80 GB storage, front facing camera, glass/ceramic back and many more features. But the OS of the handset stopped working soon (Apple might have shutdown the system remotely). The first pictures were reported by engadget.com and the rumor mill has gone crazy since then. Initially it was thought as some Japanese knock-off model, but after further reviews and analysis by different people it looks like this might be the new version of Apple iPhone 4G or iPhone HD. To prove that the model is legitimate, J Gruber posted a link for Apple’s 2006 patent application “for high-durability ceramic enclosures. Glass-like appearance and feel but far stronger and more scratch resistant. And radio transparent.” Such a material will justify the use of glass surface as enclosure of new iPhone which will be durable as well as enhance signal transmission. To further prove that it’s legit, Gizmodo opened up the unit to study the inside of it and found Apple labeled components.

According to Gizmodo website:

” What’s new

• Front-facing video chat camera
• Improved regular back-camera (the lens is quite noticeably larger than the iPhone 3GS)
• Camera flash
• Micro-SIM instead of standard SIM (like the iPad)
• Improved display. It’s unclear if it’s the 960×640 display thrown around before—it certainly looks like it, with the “Connect to iTunes” screen displaying much higher resolution than on a 3GS.
• What looks to be a secondary mic for noise cancellation, at the top, next to the headphone jack
• Split buttons for volume
• Power, mute, and volume buttons are all metallic

What’s changed

• The back is entirely flat, made of either glass (more likely) or ceramic or shiny plastic in order for the cell signal to poke through. Tapping on the back makes a more hollow and higher pitched sound compared to tapping on the glass on the front/screen, but that could just be the orientation of components inside making for a different sound
• An aluminum border going completely around the outside
• Slightly smaller screen than the 3GS (but seemingly higher resolution)
• Everything is more squared off
• 3 grams heavier
• 16% Larger battery
• Internals components are shrunken, miniaturized and reduced to make room for the larger battery .

There has been always some kind of mass hysteria attached with any Apple product launch or upgrade and this one continues the tradition. Any guesses if the guy who lost this so-called iPhone prototype in the bar is still holding on to his job? Anyways, the features look appealing and if it is really the nextgen iPhone, Apple might advance its’ release date due to the leak and I would love to upgrade from 3G to 4G in a heartbeat!!
