Deepwater Horizon Oil Rig Spilling Incident

April 27, 2010

On April 20th, Deepwater Horizon oil rig located off the coast of New Orleans  caught fire leading to explosion and spilling of oil in the Gulf of Mexico. Eleven employees working on the rig are missing and are presumed to be dead. The incident is turning out to be one of the biggest environmental disaster in recent times as the oil spill is continuing at the rate of 42,000 gallons per day and it might take another 2-4 weeks to control the spill. This huge amount of oil spill and its proximity to the Louisiana coastline is a cause of great concern to the ecosystem. US Coast guard reports area of the spill to be 42 x 80 miles lying 40 miles offshore. Besides causing environmental concerns, this incident is also going to have political implications with regard to offshore drilling. You can follow the detailed story by Washington Post and New York Times. Here is a recent satellite image provided by NASA showing the oil spill area.
