Photograph Or Painting? You Decide!

Well, you decide whether the above image is a photograph or painting. First guess will say that it’s a beautiful painting, but the fact is that it’s a photograph of landscape in Namibia. This magnificent picture was taken by Frans Lanting for a National Geographic magazine article about Namibia and it’s environmental protection laws. Beautiful landscape combined with perfect lighting resulted in this amazing picture. Here is what Frans has to say about the photograph:

“Here’s a short summary about the making of the photo. It was made at dawn when the warm light of the morning sun was illuminating a huge red sand dune dotted with white grasses while the white floor of the clay pan was still in shade. It looks blue because it reflects the color of the sky above. Because of the contrast between the shady foreground and the sunlit background I used a two-stop graduated filter which reduced the contrast. The perfect moment came when the sun reached all the way down to the bottom of the sand dune just before it reached the desert floor. I used a long telephoto lens and stopped it all the way down to compress the perspective” [By the way, the white dots in the picture are grasses on the sand dunes. You can read more about this photograph here].

Pictures From Grímsvötn Volcano

Here are a couple of new images from Grimsvotn volcano in Iceland. The volcanic eruption has already caused cancellation of various flights and closure of various airports in Britain, Ireland and Germany while warning has been issued to Denmark and Sweden airports. Volcanic ash also led to changes in president Obama’s travel plans as he had to shorten his Ireland trip and leave for Britain earlier to avoid the volcanic ash which is heading towards Britain’s air space.

Shankar Mahadevan Night in Boston

After a week long break, it’s time to update my blog with cool stories from the scientific world. But before I get to those stories, I will write something about my week long Boston trip. The whole Boston experience was just amazing. It’s a beautiful, vibrant city with lots of history. There is lot to write about my Boston experience which I will do in my next post along with pictures. During this trip, I also got a chance to attend Shankar Mahadevan concert and as always Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy trio rocked. The show started an hour late but they made it up with high energy performance. They kept the audience engaged all the time and performed most of their hit numbers. I tried to record few songs, but the audio did not come out that great, anyways here are two short clippings.

ICORS 2010

I will be traveling to Boston to attend International Conference on Raman Spectroscopy (ICORS 2010) from 7th Aug to 12th Aug. This is after 14 years ICORS is coming back to US and there are some very interesting talks and sessions in the program. Laser co-inventor and Nobel prize winner, Charles Townes, will be giving a talk on Thursday which unfortunately I wont be able to attend as I have to be back in Cincinnati by Thursday. There is a wide range of topics which will be covered- Raman Spectroscopy for biological systems and biomedical applications, analysis and characterization of Carbon nanotubes and other carbonaceous materials, Semiconductors and nanoparticles, femtosecond and attosecond spectroscopy and much more. Depending on available time, I will be posting some updates about interesting talks from time to time. And ofcourse about Boston as well !! I am excited about it, time to learn some new stuff.

Weekend Video: Cities Around The World

Traveling different cities and enjoying the local culture is one thing which I love to do and wish could get chance to travel more often. This weekend’s video consists of short videos covering cities such as Venezia or Venice, Madrid and various places in Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. Enjoy and hope you had a great weekend!

Italy is my all time favorite place to visit and the first video reminds me of my trip to Venice in 2001, almost a decade back… time flies by fast…

Spain is a fun place to be, even though I have never been to Spain but I have few Spanish friends and they are fun. This video shot in Madrid makes me want to visit Spain very soon… While watching the video try to identify an old Bollywood melody used as part of background music in this video…

Last video for today is a travel video shot in various places in Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. Beautiful montage!
