First LIBS Spectra From Mars!

Publishing a post after long long time, busy times! But couldn’t resist posting first LIBS (Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy) Spectra from Mars! It is interesting to see Hydrogen lines at 656 nm (possibly from ice on Mars or water condensation from Mars atmosphere). Carbon line adjacent to it is doubtful and needs further analysis. I can try to write more details about it later when I get time. If anyone is interested how LIBS plasma looks in Mars environment as compared to earth, you can see it here.

Combfish: Not a Jellyfish

Its been a while I updated my blog. I will try to post atleast one or two interesting posts a week from here on. To get started with, I have got a picture and video which I took while visiting Shedd Aquarium during memorial day weekend in Chicago. The image shown above is a kind of jellyfish (not exactly the same species) also called as Comb fish (Ctenophora, Greek-Comb bearers). Unlike Jellyfish, they don’t sting. As can be seen from the image that the most distinctive feature of this marine organism is comb like structure (cilia, typically 8 of them) which they use for locomotion. Their body consists of mass of jellies covered by a single layer of cells on the outside and another layer of cells inside. These layers are typically two cells deep (as compared to jellyfish which are mostly single cell deep). Similar to Jellyfish, combfish also have a network of nerves all over these layers as compared to centralized brain. The combs also scatter light which gives rainbow like effect when they move. Typically they are transparent, but some them also have bio-luminescence which gives them distinct blue and green color and can be observed in dark. There are many aspects of combfish which are not clearly understood yet. Combfish are typically predatory in nature and their bloom in Dead sea lead to wiping out of fish in the area as they ate fish larvae affecting the livelihood of fishermen. If you prefer video than just a picture, then here goes the video with combfish in motion.

Team Asha Purdue: Miles for Smiles

A bunch of enthusiastic Asha for Education, Purdue chapter volunteers have come together and initiated Team Asha Purdue for raising awareness and funds for education of underprivileged children in India. To get started with, about 40+ Team Asha Purdue members will be running for 5k run on March 31st which is organized by Academy of student Pharmacists. Team Asha Purdue is hoping to raise about 4k through this event and to achieve that goal your help is needed. In future, Team Asha Purdue will be participating in 15k and half marathons. I will be running 5k run on 31st March and will be targeting half marathons in coming months. I request all of you to please donate any amount possible- $5, $10- anything will be helpful for the kids’ education back in India.

Lets run some miles to bring smiles 🙂

Weekend Video: Ride of Passage

In my last post, I talked about world’s smallest and  cutest chameleon. Now it’s time to watch some cute animated chameleon in this issue of weekend video.

Story: Toki’s tribe expects him to bring home the head of the biggest animal possible. In return, he will receive honor and respect. However, this rite of passage does not turn out as planned. With the help of a colorful new friend, he achieves something much bigger.

Picture of The Day: Cliff Climibing Polar Bear

This is an award winning picture by photographer Jenny E. Ross where a polar bear can be seen carefully climbing the cliff above the ocean to feed on seabird eggs. Typically polar bears feed on sea seals but due to climate change and subsequent melting and receding of the polar ice it has been unable to find it’s natural food. This is a desperate attempt by the bear for it’s survival. The picture won the world press photo award in Nature category.
